What is Lifestyle Photography? - Western Mass Family Photographer

What is lifestyle photography?

Somewhere between in-studio portraits and documentary photography, lives lifestyle photography.  It’s a hybrid and the best of both worlds. It allows for a more laid-back photography session and for everyone to be themselves. Less stress and more real family moments, documenting your family in an authentic, timeless and beautiful way.

Why is this my style?

I gravitated towards lifestyle photography because of my children.  When they were babies I would think, I want to save this moment. I want to document my breastfeeding journey to remember that snuggly, safe and powerful feeling of nursing my baby. I want to bottle this fading baby smell. But I didn’t want the real clutter, spit up, and general chaos and exhaustion included in my photos.  (Documentary) I wanted the dream like vision I saw in my mind.  Lifestyle photography captures this period of your life, but captures it beautifully.  The alternative is just not for me, lugging a newborn and the rest of the family to a photography studio.  The images would not capture the chair I always nursed my babies in, the genuine sibling interactions, or just my sweet babies in the comfort of our own home.

As they grew up I realized the moments I wanted to freeze were things they did over and over again.  Things that made them unique and showed their developing personalities.  A silly expression, a favorite toy, a love of dance or singing.  Outdoor lifestyle photography allows for individuality to be incorporated and for it to be fun and painless for all involved.

Time flies!

You know how we all say the time goes by too fast?  “The days are long but the years are short.”   Don’t blink!  Lifestyle photography freezes you in that time of your life.  The images have meaning and connection, so you can remember how you felt that day when you’re eighty. And while we can’t bottle that new baby scent, a picture can take you back to that moment and you’ll swear you can almost breathe them in again.
