What to wear to a family photo session?! - Western Mass Family Photographer
What to wear, and not wear, for family photos!?
So you have a family photo session planned and you’re stressing over what to wear. Here is the roadmap for an ideal photo session wardrobe. Just add your personal touch and you’re done. Check!
Focus on you, mama. Do you, this is a great reason to set up some undisputed self-care. Get a fresh haircut or blowout, buy that dress, shirt, or jacket you’ve had your eye on, whatever makes you feel amazing like the matriarch you are. This isn’t the time to try a totally new trend or to wear a bright red lip, unless that’s your signature look. Dress yourself so you feel confident and beautiful. Once your outfit is solidified, work on the rest of the family.
Complementary colors
From your outfits color palate, work on complementary colors for family members. Pastels and jewel tones photograph well together and neutrals contribute a clean, airy feel to your session. Balance a brighter color or pattern with a neutral. Avoid graphics, neon and exact matching. Subtle matching is fine if that’s your thing, flannel nods come to mind.
A good fit
Make sure the clothing fits everyone well. While something a little too small can be unflattering, something too big can look sloppy. For this moment in time be sure to choose outfits that aren’t loose and don’t need on the fly alterations. Constant adjustments will distract from the session flow and vibe.
Add some cute kiddos
Dresses photograph beautifully and can add movement to your images. A little girl twirling in a dress, swoon! But, if your daughter hates dresses, please skip it. And the same goes for boys, I love a little boy in a button down shirt, but if he doesn’t feel comfortable in it, then it’s a no. Basically the same goes for dad. A hard rule is no fussy clothing, if they’re not happy in their clothes you’ll have a fussy kid, or worse, a grumpy guy.
Shoes and accessories
Pay attention to shoes too cause they will appear in some photos. Shoes should be clean and coordinate with the outfit chosen for each family member, including the children. Usually this means skipping the sneakers, unless you’re going for an athletic look. Accessories should be minimal as not to distract from the family. Tailored jackets and vests can be slimming in addition to adding depth to your family images. Layers add visual interest but also allow your family to be ready for varied weather.
Don’t get overwhelmed. Most importantly, go with feeling comfortable with your clothing style and fit. Have fun with it, it’s all part of this family tradition.
